General overview
Dataset manager includes tools for linking, creating, deleting databases, physical removal of dataset from database, cloning dataset and adding/removing dataset to project. This is a summary of what you can do with this tool:
Link database to Analyst. Click on "Link" button and insert connection parameters.
Edit database connection parameters click on "Edit" button and modify connection parameters.
Unlink database from Analyst. Click on "Unlink" button.
Deleting database from disk. Click on " Delete DB" button. This action is non-reversible!
Create new empty database. Click on "Create DB" button and insert basic database information.
Filter and search datasets in db. Click on filter button and filter tool opens. You can filter datasets in database by name or by site name. This tool is not case-sensitive.
Remove dataset from database. Click on "Remove from DB" button and confirm. This action is non-reversible!
Make copy of dataset. Click on "Clone" button and insert parameters necessary for the clone tool.
Linking (unlink) dataset to project. Click on "Link to project" button ("Unlink from project" button).
Component | Description
1 | Database | List of available databases |
2 | Refresh | Refresh database connection |
3 | Database info | Basic information about the selected database. |
4 | Link | Opens dialog for linking the existing database to Analyst |
Edit | Opens dialog for editing path of existing database
Convert | Converting database from old version of database used in version 1.4.1 or earlier into current version.
Unlink | Removes database from the list of available databases. Does not remove database from disk
5 | Optimize DB | Size optimization of DB |
Create DB | Opens dialog for creating a new database.
Delete DB | Delete database from disk.
6 | Datasets in database | List of datasets stored in selected database. |
Searching (zoom icon) | Opens hidden part of dialog with searching tool for datasets in database. Searching is possible to do by name or by site name.
7 | Datasets in project | List of datasets linked to project |
8 | Remove from DB | Removes selected datasets from database and project. |
Clone | Opens clone dialog.
9 | Link to project | Connects dataset to project. Adding dataset to project is possible by dragging from list of datasets in the database and dropping to list of datasets in a project. |
Unlink from project | Remove dataset from the project. It does not remove the dataset from the database.
10 | Dataset info | Basic information about the selected dataset. |
Green marker on database indicates successful connection, red marker indicates unsuccessful connection.
You can display data table before linking dataset to project by right click on dataset in the list a then choose "Table view".
Link database
Creates a new connection between Analyst and database. The database is connected to Analyst application, not to the project. If you connect a database once, you can use the database in every project.
Insert connection parameters.
Write the path of the database manually; an easier way is using "Browse" button and choose your database. For DB engine is supported SQLite option only.
Choose the name of the database.
Write a description of the database. It is optional.
Test connection by clicking on "Test" button. This step is not necessary because connection testing is automatically launched during linking (step 3).
Click on "Link" button
Edit database connection
Edits existing connection between Analyst and database.
How to use Edit:
Edit connection parameters.
Edit path of database manually; an easier way is using "Browse" button and choosing your database. For DB engine is supported SQLite option only.
Edit your name of database.
Write description of database. It is optional.
Test connection by click on "Test" button. This step is not necessary because connection testing is automatically launched during Editing (step 3).
Click on "Edit" button
The database is connected to the Analyst application, not to the project. If you connect a database once, you can use the database in every project.
Create a database
If you started with a fresh installation of Analyst, your first step will be the creation of a new database and importing your datasets. The easiest way to create a new and empty Analyst database is with the option "Create DB" in Dataset/Manager. This creates a new empty database in actual Analyst format and physically save it on disk. A Database is automatically visible to Analyst application once it is created. Then your database is ready for importing datasets.
Insert database parameters.
Write the path of the database manually; an easier way is using "Browse" button and choosing location and file name for the new database.
Choose the name of the database. The database name can be different from the file name.
Write a description of the database (optional).
Click on "Create" button.
Link other datasets
If you have been given already existing Analyst datasets (e.g. from your colleague) you need to link them with your project. The main tool for linking datasets is Dataset/Database manager. Dataset manager allows you to browse databases, search for datasets by name and link/unlink with the project. Linking datasets consists of three simple steps:
Select a database.
Select datasets from the list of datasets in the database (you can use the search filter and select more than one dataset.
Press "Link to project".
Unlinking datasets is possible from the Main window as well.
Clone dataset
"Clone" tool duplicates selected dataset with a new name to another or the same database.
How to use Clone:
Choose a dataset for cloning from the list of datasets before you launch Clone tool.
Choose the new name of the dataset and the database for storage. Optional step: If you want to create a smaller dataset (subset) than the original, you have to check "Clip by datetime" and choose the interval of the new dataset ("First date" and "Last date").
Click on "Clone" button
Unlinking datasets is possible from the Main window as well (right-click on dataset name).
